- Look for a karat stamp. Most gold jewelry is marked inside a ring band or near a clasp: 10K, 14K, 18K or 22K, or the number versions 417, 585, 750 and 916.
- Check for plating marks. GP, GE, HGE, RGP and GF mean a piece is plated or gold-filled rather than solid gold, even when a karat number appears next to them (like 1/20 14K GF). We don't buy those pieces.
- Unmarked can still be real. Resized, repaired and older pieces can lose their stamp. If you believe a piece is solid gold, bring it and we'll check it.
- Skip costume jewelry. Pieces bought as fashion jewelry are rarely gold, however convincing they look.

No tolls (about 1 hour 50 minutes): from State St and Main St, head east on State St and south on Alpine Rd to US-20 east. Follow US-20 about 23 miles to Route 47 south, ride Route 47 about 25 miles to US-30 east, then exit toward Douglas Rd and turn left. We're half a mile up, on the left. About 65 miles in all.
