Why karat makes such a difference
Karat tells you how much of a piece is pure gold. The rest is other metals, mixed in for strength and color. Here's what that means for a piece weighing 10 grams:
- 10K: a little over 4 of the 10 grams is pure gold.
- 14K: almost 6 of the 10 grams is pure gold.
- 18K: 7 and a half of the 10 grams is pure gold.
- 22K: just over 9 of the 10 grams is pure gold.
- 24K: essentially all 10 grams is pure gold.
The higher the karat, the more pure gold a piece contains, and the more it's worth. Two pieces that weigh exactly the same can be worth very different amounts, which is why we test the purity of every piece at the counter, so higher-karat gold is always paid as higher-karat gold.
Spotting your higher-karat pieces
Higher-karat gold doesn't always announce itself. An 18K chain can look almost identical to a 14K one, and a stamp can be worn away completely. That's why every item is tested individually rather than judged by eye, and why your offer shows each karat on its own line, so you can see exactly which pieces carried the most value.
22K and 24K jewelry is usually a deep yellow and noticeably soft, and it may be marked 916 or 999 instead of with a karat number. We test it like everything else. Our real-gold guide covers more on marks and stamps.

Two ways to drive from Wheaton
Fastest, about 35 minutes: from Main St and Front St, head south on Main St, then west on Roosevelt Rd (Route 38). Turn left on Winfield Rd, right on Diehl Rd, and take I-88 west (a short tolled stretch). Exit at IL-31 south, follow it through Aurora into Montgomery, turn left on Mill St to cross the river, then left on Douglas Ave.
Toll-free, about 4 to 6 minutes longer: Butterfield Rd (Route 56) west keeps you off the tollway. Choose "avoid tolls" in Get Directions, and your phone will map the exact turns.
